The Irish development agency, Trocaire, has warned that the deployment of Western troops in Sudan's troubled Darfur region would result in a war similar to the conflict in Iraq.

The prediction comes as a UN investigator concluded that it was 'beyond doubt' that the Sudanese government was responsible for widespread killings in Darfur,

It further concluded that Khartoum was largely to blame for the humanitarian disaster.

Peacekeeping force to arrive in Darfur

Meanwhile, the African Union says its first troops should arrive in the troubled Sudanese region of Darfur next week.

The African Union is sending 2,400 peacekeeping troops to the area.

The soldiers are from Rwanda and Nigeria. Financial support is coming from the Netherlands and both the EU and the US are helping with logistics.
