AIB has been ordered to pay damages of almost €20,000 plus costs for overcharging a shopkeeper on his current account over a two-year period.

Shopkeeper Denis Murphy of West Beach, Cobh, Co Cork, sued AIB at the Circuit Court, claiming he had been overcharged by more than €9,000.

He refused an offer from the bank today to settle the case for €35,000, because he said he wanted the facts of his case made public.

Awarding both aggravated and punitive damages against AIB, Judge James O'Donoghue said in light of recent overcharging scandals at the bank, it was timely for the courts to register their disapproval and to discourage such behaviour in the future.

AIB has refused to comment.
