Ahern to propose Barroso as president

The Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, is to formally propose the Portuguese Prime Minister Jose Manuel Durao Barroso as president of the European Commission at an EU Council summit in Brussels on Tuesday.

The Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern is to formally propose the Portuguese Prime Minister Jose Manuel Durao Barroso as president of the European Commission at an EU Council summit in Brussels on Tuesday.

Mr Ahern made the announcement in a statement issued to the media this afternoon. Earlier, he said there was overwhelming support for the appointment for Mr Barroso to the position and said he had told him this last night. 

Mr Ahern has been discussing the issue with his counterparts in other member states. Speaking on Sky News this morning, he said he was hopeful they would agree on Mr Barroso's appointment.
