The chief negotiator at the Abbeylara siege has been accused at the Barr Tribunal of 'appalling arrogance' and an inability to admit he did anything wrong at the incident.

Counsel for John Carthy's family, Michael O'Higgins SC, accused Detective Inspector Michael Jackson of refusing to concede that any of the decisions made by him at Abbeylara may have been misguided.

Mr O'Higgins said the Detective Inspector had persistently given 'total non-answers' to queries and criticisms put to him in his three appearances at the inquiry.

Mr O'Higgins went on to suggest that this demonstrated an intransigence on the part of the Detective Inspector which he said was an inappropriate inequality for a national negotiator.

Detective Inspector Jackson denied any deliberate dodging of questions and said he answered each query as it arose.
