Concern over pharmaceutical counterfeiting

Updated: 19:38, Thursday, 24 June 2004

One of the biggest pharmaceutical companies in the world has voiced fears that counterfeiters are putting people's health at risk.

Pfizer, which manufactures drugs such as Viagra, is calling for stricter controls to halt illegal trade in fake products.

The World Health Organisation recently estimated that fake drugs account for 10% of global commerce in pharmaceuticals.

Viagra is widely counterfeited and sold over the Internet, but Pfizer says other medicines including those to treat high cholesterol and heart conditions are also being copied.

The company says they have no active ingredients and can be either ineffective or dangerous to health.
