A former Fianna Fáil councillor says his life has been 'made hell' by what he claims was a false allegation of corruption by Tom Gilmartin.

A former Fianna Fáil councillor says his life has been 'made hell' by what he claims was a false allegation of corruption by Tom Gilmartin.

Finbarr Hanrahan was alleged by Mr Gilmartin to have demanded £100,000 in return for his support of the Quarryvale development.

Mr Hanrahan told the Mahon Tribunal his professional, political and social life had been changed completely by that lie.

He said his position is now that he is 'damned, damned, damned' and even today a member of the public had abused him in the courtyard.

He described Mr Gilmartin as embittered and said he seemed to want to bring everyone down including the Government because he could not get his town centre development off the ground.

The former Lucan councillor said he agreed to meet Mr Gilmartin in Buswells Hotel early in 1989 but told him he would not support Quarryvale because another site had already been zoned in Balgaddy.

He said he believes Mr Gilmartin made up his allegation because he was frustrated, peeved and angry that he did not roll over and do what he wanted.

Under cross examination by Hugh O'Neill SC, counsel for Mr Gilmartin, he admitted that he had first presented this version of events three months ago.

Mr Hanrahan earlier said he could not remember who approached him to support a shopping centre planned by developer Owen O'Callaghan.

The councillor proposed a Section Four motion for the shopping centre at Cooldrinagh, near Lucan in Co Dublin, in March 1988.

He told the Mahon Tribunal that he met Mr O'Callaghan for the first time in the autumn of that year after the motion was first proposed.

In answer to counsel for Tom Gilmartin, Mr Hanrahan said it did not occur to him that this development could interfere with the town centre planned for Balgaddy.
