Dublin City Council says it has begun fining Local and European Election candidates who have not yet taken down their election posters.

The council says it has 23 litter wardens out today taking down posters. It says some of them are 'at a huge height' and are proving difficult to remove.

The council says only 45 Local Election candidates availed of its offer of a removal service for the posters at a cost of €300. No European candidates availed of the service.

Fine Gael's Dublin office has apologised for the late removal of some of its posters. It says it has teams working around the clock to take them down when it is safe to do so.

But it says current weather conditions are posing a safety hazard to the teams.
