At the Barr Tribunal, a garda has been asked why a vehicle used as a command post by the Emergency Response Unit was driven away from the area before a forensic examination took place.

At the Barr Tribunal, a garda has been asked why a vehicle used as a command post by the Emergency Response Unit was driven away from the area before a forensic examination took place.

The tribunal is investigating the fatal shooting of John Carthy in Abbeylara in April 2000.

Sergeant Sean Leydon told Mr Justice Robert Barr that it was news to him that the garda jeep had been driven away from the area before he took steps to preserve the scene.

Earlier at the tribunal, it emerged that Sergeant Leydon had failed to log information on the ammunition held by two members of the Emergency Response Unit who handed him their guns five hours after the shooting of John Carthy.

Sergeant Leydon said that he did not recall receiving ammunition but that it was possible he had done so and he had made an honest mistake in failing to record the details on the log.
