Education Minister Noel Dempsey has apologised for having his department compile material used by Fianna Fáil election candidates and that the party is to repay the €2,500 cost to the department.

Mr Dempsey made a personal statement to the Dáil, saying that the Standards in Public Office Commission had decided not to hold a full investigation.

However, it did say it was of the view that the minister did not have regard to, or been guided by, the Code of Conduct for Office Holders.

As a result, Mr Dempsey said, he was apologising to his colleagues in Government and the Dáil.

He said Fianna Fáil was making arrangements to repay the €2,590.40 cost to the department for materials and civil service time involved.
