A former Northern Ireland World Flyweight Boxing Champion has been convicted of passing forged sterling notes in Co Donegal.

Dave McCauley, 42, of Larne, Co Antrim pleaded guilty to passing two counterfeit £20 sterling notes in a bar in Letterkenny last month.

Known as Dave 'boy' McCauley, the former boxer is now the part-owner of a hotel.

He said he was on a stag night in Letterkenny and was very drunk and had no idea where he got the notes. But he said they could have slipped through the net in his business.

Judge John O' Donnell said he found it hard to believe that a person in business would not be super-conscious of forged notes being passed. He fined McCauley €600.
