The President of the African state of Congo has gone on national television to say he is still in charge after an apparent coup attempt.

Joseph Kabila blamed dissidents in his own personal guard, saying a dozen had been arrested while another 20 or so had fled.

Security forces had surrounded the ringleader, a major in the presidential guard, who was trying to flee.

It followed reports of explosions and small arms fire near the main airport in the capital city, Kinshasa.

It is the second coup attempt in the vast Central African country this year.
