The Colombian Government has said it has no objection to three Irishmen who were convicted of travelling on false passports returning home.

In April, Martin McAuley, James Monaghan and Niall Connolly were found not guilty of the more serious charge of training FARC rebels.

They have remained in prison following the verdicts.

At a meeting this afternoon in Bogota, the Colombian Vice-President Francisco Santos told the Sinn Féin MLAs Gerry Kelly and Catriona Ruane that the government had no problem with the men returning to Ireland, but that the final decision rested with the relevant magistrates.

It is understood that the Colombian government's statement is a direct response to a request made less than a fortnight ago by the Taoiseach.

The Bring Them Home Committee has described today's meeting as positive, and says it will be in contact with the magistrates tomorrow.
