The Board of Management at a Co Monaghan school are refusing to let the premises be used as a polling station in protest over a cut in their teacher numbers.

Knocknagrave National School in Tydavnet currently has two teachers and 13 pupils.

The Department of Education is proposing to take one of the teachers from the start of the new term even though five new pupils will be joining.

Paul Connolly from the school's board of management said they were willing to talk with the Department of Education to try and resolve the issue.

There are 801 people registered to vote at the polling station in the school. The County Registrar, Josephine Duffy, said they were trying to find an alternative polling station in the village.
