The head of the Garda Press Office has told the Barr Tribunal that he asked RTÉ not to name John Carty during the Abbeylara siege.

But Superintendent John Farrelly's evidence is contradicted by RTÉ's Crime Correspondent, Paul Reynolds, who denied that any such request was made.

Mr Carty's name was given out during an RTÉ radio programme. The siege ended with him being shot dead by gardaí.

Superintendent Farrelly said he checked briefly with Mr Reynolds saying 'you are not naming him, are you?' But he admits that he does not specifically remember when he asked this.

In his statement to the tribunal, Mr Reynolds said it was decided internally within RTÉ not to name Mr Carty and not as result of a garda request.

Mr Reynolds said when he discovered that Five Seven Live were going to name Mr Carty, he reminded Niall O'Flynn, who was reporting for the programme, of this decision.

But he said Mr O'Flynn replied that Mr Carty had already been named in the newspapers and that the report had already been sent to Dublin.

Superintendent Farrelly said he was very annoyed and used bad language when he discovered that Mr Carty's name was going to be used.

But he admitted he did not tell Mr O'Flynn not to use the name although he had met him on a number of occasions that day.
