There is a significant level of voter confusion as to the implications of a Yes or No vote in the referendum on citizenship, according to the chairman of the Referendum Commission.

The chairman of the Referendum Commission, Mr Justice Nicholas Kearns, has said there is a significant level of voter confusion as to the implications of a Yes or No vote in the upcoming referendum on citizenship.

Mr Justice Kearns has been outlining how the Referendum Commission will be providing information to the public about the referendum.

He said the commission will be seeking to explain the subject matter and promote awareness as well as encouraging voting.

Mr Justice Kearns said that an information booklet is being sent to every household in the country, and will reach every home by the end of this week. He said the seven-page document is brief and to the point and can be read in a few minutes.

In a poll of 800 potential voters, four out of every five people were aware of the referendum. Almost 60% per cent were aware that the referendum had something to do with citizenship, but there was considerable confusion about the actual details.

The poll also showed that just over two-thirds of registered voters intend to vote in the referendum.
