The Director of Public Prosecutions has made a strong attack on elements of the Irish media, which he said seemed determined to imitate the unacceptable excesses of British tabloid journalism.

Speaking at the National Prosecutors' Conference in Dublin, James Hamilton said there was a pressing need to reform the contempt of court laws.

He also said that a press council was needed to deal with sensationalist reporting which falls short of contempt.
