Portmarnock Golf Club in north Dublin has had its licence suspended for seven days for refusing to allow women to become members of the club.

However, the suspension will not come into effect until after the completion of legal proceedings being taken by the club.

The decision was welcomed by the Equality Authority. Spokesman Niall Crowley said it was the first time that a sanction had been imposed against a club under the Equal Status Act.
