One Iraqi was killed and five wounded in the holy city of Karbala in overnight clashes between coalition troops and the militia of radical Shi'ite cleric Moqtada Sadr.

Most of the fighting took place close to the Imam Hussein shrine, one of the most revered pilgrimage spots for Shi'ite Muslims in the world.

The US military said that 30 militiamen had been killed in fighting the previous night in the city.

Karbala was seized by Sadr's Mehdi Army militia at the beginning of last month in an uprising that swept across central southern Iraq against the US-led occupation troops.

Salim funeral held in Baghdad

In Baghdad, the funeral of Governing Council President Ezzedine Salim has taken place inside the headquarters of the occupying US army.

The UN special envoy and Mr Salim's successor, Sheikh Ghazi al-Yawar, joined US administrator Paul Bremer for the ceremony.

Mr Salim was killed in a suicide bombing as he waited to enter the so-called 'Green Zone' in Baghdad yesterday.

And the US military said this morning that two Marines were killed yesterday in Al Anbar province. The province includes Fallujah, scene of fierce fighting over recent weeks.
