SIPTU has accused management at Independent Newspapers of breaching the Sustaining Progress agreement by refusing to attend talks at the Labour Court.

SIPTU has accused management at Independent Newspapers of breaching the Sustaining Progress agreement by refusing to attend talks at the Labour Court.

The company is seeking over 200 redundancies from crafts, general operatives and administrative grades by 21 May, and also plans to outsource another 50 jobs.

The matter was referred to the Labour Court after meetings last week with the National Implementation Body, which oversees the implementation of national wage agreements.

This evening, a spokesperson for SIPTU said workers were shocked by management's refusal to attend talks.

The union will hold a meeting of members this evening before deciding on any action.

It is understood that management has identified 50 administrative posts that will be outsourced to companies in Armagh, Clonakilty, Co Cork and the UK.

The union says terms and conditions have not been clarified for outsourced staff or for those remaining with the company.
