The attorney general of Colombia has filed an appeal against last month's acquittal of three Irishmen who had been accused of teaching bomb-making to Marxist rebels.
Jim Monaghan, Niall Connolly and Martin McCauley, who deny ties to the IRA, will not be allowed to leave Colombia until the appeals process runs its course.
The three men are refusing to leave a Bogota jail until the government provides them with protection.
David Andrews, Chairman of the Irish Red Cross, has said that a high level representative of the Irish Government should go to Colombia and accompany the three out of prison.
They should then bring them to the airport and out of the country he said
