The owner of the Citywest Hotel in Dublin has expressed disappointment at An Bord Pleanála's decision to refuse planning permission for a €50 million convention centre beside the hotel.

Jim Mansfield said he is considering his options and may challenge the decision in the High Court. He said the centre would create 400 jobs if it was built.

South Dublin County Council had granted permission for the centre last November, but the decision was appealed to the planning board by the heritage group, An Taisce.

The board's inspector recommended upholding the granting of permission, but the board voted by seven to one to reject it.

Mr Mansfield had carried out considerable work on the site and a large steel frame for the centre is already in place.
