The Minister for Transport, Séamus Brennan, has announced that a new road traffic Bill will go before the Dáil before the summer recess. The Bill will see the introduction of random breath testing.

Mr Brennan was speaking at Dublin Castle, where EU Transport Ministers have signed what has been described as a historic European charter on road safety.

About 40,000 people die on Europe's roads each year and the aim is to halve this figure over the next six years.

At this morning's ceremony in Dublin Castle, nearly 40 organisations representing industry, road users and other private and public organisations committed to reducing the numbers who die on the roads.

Each EU state will adapt tough new measures to target drink driving and speeding as the main causes of road death.

The six-time Formula One world champion, Michael Schumacher, is giving his backing to the initiative.
