The Minister for the Environment has warned local authorities that they risk losing out on economic development unless they take urgent action to ensure incinerators are introduced.

In his starkest warning to date, Martin Cullen said he would push to ensure thermal treatment plants were delivered and said there would be no hiding place for those who failed.

He said it was clear that if progress was not made in the country's seven classified regions, then they would lose out to foreign direct investment.

Mr Cullen identified the Clare, Kerry and Limerick regions, as well as the Connaught region, as not having made enough progress to date.
