A post mortem has taken place on the body of the 64-year-old mother of five who was shot dead at her West Dublin home this morning.

Two masked, armed men broke their way in and shot the woman in an upstairs bedroom of the house at Avonbeg Park in Tallaght. She was at home with her husband and brother at the time.

A full murder investigation has been launched. The State Pathologist, Dr Marie Cassidy, and a team from the Garda Technical Bureau have carried out a preliminary examination at the scene.

Gardaí say they know of no motive for the shooting. Witnesses say they saw two men fleeing from the house after the killing.

The victim of the shooting was well known in the Tallaght community where she lived. Neighbours have described her, a parish worker who was collecting envelopes for the church lotto draw last night, as a 'living saint'.

Appeal for witnesses

Local TD Charlie O'Connor described the killing as a shocking event.

Gardaí in Tallaght are appealing for any witnesses to the shooting to contact Tallaght Garda Station at 01 6666000 or the Garda confidential line on 1800 666 111.
