Harney defends comments on transport

The Tánaiste, Mary Harney, has said that her comments at the weekend concerning transport reform did not contravene Government policy.

However, Ms Harney said she regretted if her remarks had been misinterpreted.

She reiterated that transport could not continue to operate under models set up in the 1920s and 1930s.

SIPTU pulled out of talks on the second half of the Sustaining Progress pay deal with the Government yesterday in protest at the remarks which it said showed no concern for workers in Aer Rianta and CIÉ.
