Kerry reaches required delegates quota

Senator John Kerry has won the required number of delegates to formally gain the Democrat nomination for the US presidential race in November.

It follows the Massachusetts senator's victory in the Illinois primary last night, which puts him over the 2,162 figure needed at the party convention in Boston in July.

Last night's result was seen as a formality as Senator Kerry had effectively seen off all internal challengers with his convincing victory in the Super Tuesday polls two weeks ago.
