30-year jail term sought for Fujimoro

Updated: 20:42, Saturday, 13 March 2004

Prosecutors in Peru are seeking a 30-year jail sentence for former president Alberto Fujimori.

They accuse him of ordering the La Colina paramilitary death squad to kill 25 people in 1991 and 1992.

Mr Fujimori, who fled to Japan in November 2000 after a corruption scandal, denies wrongdoing and says he is a victim of political persecution.

Peru is working to have him sent back, but he is a citizen of Japan, which bars the extradition of its citizens.

He is wanted in Peru on charges including murder, kidnapping and inflicting grievous wounds.
