Zimbabwe to charge 60 men with coup plot

Updated: 11:39, Friday, 12 March 2004

Zimbabwe will charge more than 60 men detained as suspected mercenaries with plotting to destabilise a sovereign government, a government spokesman has said.

Zimbabwe has accused the group of seeking to topple the government of oil-rich Equatorial Guinea.

The men were taken into custody on Sunday following the seizure of a US-registered cargo plane which the Zimbabwean government said was carrying military material.

It is reported that the suspects are mainly South Africans, Angolans and Namibians.
