Frances Sheridan returned to Cavan General Hospital last January complaining of pains three weeks after having her appendix removed. She was told the pain was probably a tummy bug and was sent home. She died 36 hours later.
At the inquest today, part of the post mortem report by the State Pathologist, Dr Marie Cassidy, was read out. Dr Cassidy said that part of Frances Sheridan's bowel had become trapped as post operative scar tissue healed. This eventually led to her choking to death on gastric contents.
It has also emerged that the gardaí are investigating the matter and a file on the case will be sent to the DPP.
The North Eastern Health Board is also conducting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the young girl's death.
