New research published today indicates that smokers are at least three times as likely to go blind in later life as non-smokers.

Smoking, Blindness link? Smoking, Blindness link?

According to a report in the British Medical Journal, scientists have found that smokers are more prone to develop a condition known as age-related macular degeneration, or AMD, which is the most common cause of adult blindness.

The condition results in severe and irreversible loss of central vision.

Researchers estimated that one in five AMD cases in the UK might be attributable to smoking.
