The family of the murdered Belfast solicitor Pat Finucane has held a 15-minute meeting in Belfast with the London Metropolitan Police Commissioner, Sir John Stevens.

Afterwards, Mr Finucane's widow Geraldine said the meeting had been useful, but she stressed that they told Sir John Stevens that the family was not there to support his police inquiry into her husband's death.

She further stated that they wanted him to hand over the police files to an independent judicial inquiry.

Sir John Stevens said the issue of a public inquiry was a matter for the British government. Mr Finucane was shot dead by loyalist gunmen at his Belfast home in 1989.
