The Kerry county branch of the VFI has voted unanimously in favour of reaffirming an earlier motion stating they would not enforce the incoming ban on smoking.

The Kerry county branch of the Vintners' Federation of Ireland has voted unanimously in favour of reaffirming an earlier motion stating they would not enforce the incoming ban on smoking in the workplace.

The vote was taken at the branch's annual general meeting in Tralee.

John O'Sullivan, the chairman of the VFI's Kerry branch, said Kerry publicans would wait until the Department of Health published directives on implementation of the ban before deciding on their next step.

Earlier, SIPTU voiced concern over how the Minister for Health's guidelines on workplaces to be exempted from the smoking ban, will deal with the issue of passive smoking.

Micheál Martin announced yesterday the ban would come into force on 29 March.

On RTÉ radio, SIPTU's Health and Safety Adviser, Sylvester Cronin, said he and his union were not consulted when Mr Martin came up with the exemptions and he did not make clear when the guidelines would be introduced.
