Joint motion agreed by Opposition

Updated: 22:08, Friday, 13 February 2004

The three main Opposition parties have agreed a joint motion opposing the Government's plans for the extension of electronic voting.

The motion, supported by Fine Gael, Labour and the Green Party, will be debated in the Dáil during Fine Gael's private members' time on Tuesday and Wednesday.

It calls on the Government to defer plans to use electronic voting in the European and local elections.

The motion also calls for the suspension of any further expenditure on the project until an independent Electoral Commission has been established to address the concerns about the system.

This is the first such joint Opposition motion in the current Dáil.
