The Massachusetts Senator, John Kerry, has consolidated his position as the leading candidate for the Democratic Party's nomination in November's US presidential election.

Mr Kerry secured five of the seven states that held primary and caucus meetings, winning contests in Missouri, Arizona, New Mexico, North Dakota and Delaware. It follows his success in Iowa and New Hampshire last month.

Meanwhile Senator John Edwards won his home state of South Carolina, while the retired general, Wesley Clark, secured the primary in Oklahoma.

Another contender, Senator Joe Lieberman, dropped out of the race.
