Political row over presidential election

Major differences emerged today between the Government and the Labour party over whether or not there should be a presidential election later this year.

Labour leader Pat Rabbitte reiterated his party's position that there should be a contest for the presidency when President Mc Aleese's first term expires

However, Government Minister Brian Lenihan accused Labour of turning the presidency into a political football.
