A Sudanese man charged with firearms offences after arriving at London's Heathrow Airport from Washington has been remanded in custody.

Wassila Alhibr Alwasila, 45, spoke through an interpreter to confirm his name and age at London's Bow Street Magistrates Court today. The case was adjourned until 23 January.

Mr Alwasila was arrested on Wednesday after passing through a security check following his arrival on a Virgin Atlantic flight en route to Dubai.

Security sources said he was carrying five bullets. British police said he is charged with two offences of possession of prohibited ammunition and one charge of possessing dangerous articles on an airliner.

His arrest led to an investigation into airport security in the United States.
