The study has been carried out by the Men's Health Forum in Ireland, a voluntary network of individuals and organisations, North and South.
It is understood to be the most comprehensive review of statistics of men's health on this island and to highlight several very serious issues for Irish males.
Among the conclusions are that men take risks with their health, often not going to the doctor on time and not getting treatment until it is too late.
It emphasises that, on average, men die six years younger than women and that the rate of suicide for men is four times the rate for women.
The forum recommends that a multi-sector advisory group be set up to look specifically at men's health issues. It wants research in the area increased and for specific policies on men's health to be developed.
It is also recommended that healthcare professionals working with men receive special training.
