Dublin hospital overcrowding move

Health boards in the eastern region have been instructed to reopen all their closed long stay beds in an effort to alleviate overcrowding.

The Eastern Regional Health Authority instruction means nearly 200 long stay beds will be reopened as soon as possible, as a measure to deal with the crisis in the emergency departments of the major Dublin hospitals.

There were over 150 patients on trolleys awaiting admissions in the six major Dublin hospitals today, leading to the cancellation of elective surgery.

The Irish Nurses' Organisation has described the overcrowding situation as unacceptable.

The Irish Medical Organisation has described the latest crisis as entirely predictable.
