A new report has found that there has been a dramatic improvement in transport facilities for people with disabilities.

However, the National Disability Authority study also recommends that the Government ensures that transport laws contain requirements for more accessibility in the future.

The NDA report paints a generally positive picture of transport facilities from people with disability, noting that found that four years ago there was minimal access on buses, coaches and trains in the Republic of Irlenad.

Today, the report shows, all of Bus Eireann's urban fleet as well as 40% of the Dublin Bus fleet are low-foor.

By 2005, all stations on Dublin's Dart line will be fully accessible, and when Luas begins this year it will be fully accessible to people with disabilities.

However, the report also shows that existing rail transport infrastructure requires substantial investment to make it accessible, and the Authority says that despite the progress so far, serious challenges to ensuring accessibility for all remain.
