TDs and the political parties are studying the details of a sweeping review, published yesterday, which recommends changes in 27 of the existing 42 Dáil constituencies.

The independent commission proposes a reconfiguration of the political map that would create an extra constituency in Co Meath and see Co Leitrim divided in two.

Speaking on RTÉ radio, the Sligo/Leitrim Fianna Fáil TD, John Ellis, indicated he might transfer to the new South Leitrim/Roscommon constituency in the next general election.

Last night, the Green Party and Sinn Féin claimed that the increase in the number of three-seat constituencies would militate against smaller parties.

The full report will be published on the Constituency Commission website shortly
