Millions of people have taken part in celebrations to see in the New Year, despite fears in some countries over possible terrorist attacks.

Millions of people have taken part in celebrations to see in the New Year, despite fears in some countries over possible terrorist attacks.

In major cities, crowds ranged from up to three quarters of a million in Berlin and New York and around 100,000 in central London.

In Ireland, wet and windy conditions resulted in smaller crowds gathering in cities and towns.

Gardaí estimate that around 2,000 revellers were in central Dublin to hear the bells of Christ Church Cathedral usher in 2004.
