Praise for Irish moves on heart disease

The WHO has commended Ireland for taking the initiative in tackling heart disease, Europe's single biggest killer, during the forthcoming EU presidency.

The World Health Organisation has commended the Department of Health and Children for taking the initiative, under Ireland's forthcoming presidency of the EU, in tackling cardiovascular disease, Europe's single biggest killer.

Historically, Ireland has had one of the highest rates of the disease in the EU.

Despite this, the WHO Co-ordinator for Cardiovascular Diseases, Dr Shanthi Mendis, said that Ireland had shown great leadership in its approach to this disease and had taken practical and achievable steps in addressing it.
