Seán Ó Cuirreáin, Leas-Cheannasaí (deputy director) of RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta has been nominated by the Government as the new Irish Language Commissioner.
His official title will be An Coimisinéir Teanga.
His appointment will be ratified by President Mary McAleese, after a motion passes through both houses of the Oireachtas after Christmas.
The Coimisinéir will be responsible for the proper implementation of the Official Languages Act 2003, which obliges all public bodies to deliver public services through Irish where requested.
