The east Galway village of New Inn is to be the location for the county's controversial new superdump.

The decision was announced this evening following several years of site investigations and protests.

Two other locations - at Newbridge in the north of the county and at Ballinahistle, near Kilrickle in the east - had been shortlisted as possible sites for the 50-acre landfill site.

All three villages had strongly opposed the superdump plan on environmental, health, safety, and heritage grounds.

Galway County Council says the New Inn site, which is 12 kilometres from the town of Loughrea, was recommended by its consultant engineers. It says the site can be easily accessed from the proposed new N6 roadway.

An environmental impact assessment will be prepared before approval is sought from An Bord Pleanála.
