Michael Collins Tax data to go to DPP
The Standards in Public Office Commission announced today that, having considered legal advice on the matter, it had decided to refer the matter to the DPP.
Mr Collins supplied the Commission with a tax clearance certificate following his re-election in last year's General Election.
However, it was revealed last September that he had reached a settlement with the Revenue Commissioners for non-payment of taxes.
Mr Collins subsequently resigned from the Fianna Fáil parliamentary party.
The matter is also being referred to the Dáil Committee on Members' Interests.
This committee has the power of investigating only whether a non-office holding TD has contravened the Ethics Acts, because the Commission has been advised that the legislation does not allow it to investigate the validity of the evidence of tax compliance provided by Mr Collins.
