There is huge interest in the sale, with thousands of people bidding in person, in writing and on the phone.

The famous painting by Sarah Purser of a young Constance Markievicz and her sister Eva was sold to a private Irish collector for €240,000. The guide price was between €30,000 and €50,000.

A William Haverty painting, 'The Limerick Piper', sold for a record €238,000, seven times the previous recorded price for a Haverty. It was also bought by a private Irish collector.

HOK Fine Art Auctioneers had estimated that the total sum to be realised at auction would be approximately €1m.

However, by the half-way mark this afternoon, the auction had already realised €1.2m.
