Just under half a million homes now have a computer connected to the internet, seven times the figure recorded in 1998.

Almost 600,000 homes have a computer, connected or not; that is almost double the 1998 figure.

The figures also show that more than €190m worth of goods were sold over the internet last year. The average spend for consumers was between €200 and €500.

339,000 people log on to the internet in Ireland every day.

82% of people who log on use the internet to email, 69.1% for finding information on goods and services and 53.8% for travel and booking holidays.

The study also shows that 85% of Irish companies use email, while 59% have a website.
