The Taoiseach has disputed figures from the St Vincent De Paul that 300,000 children are living in households which earn less than €175 a week.

The Taoiseach has disputed last week's figures from the St Vincent De Paul society that 300,000 children are living in households which earn less than €175 a week.

Bertie Ahern said that most people in Ireland were now relatively well off but accepted many children were still living in poverty.

Mr Ahern was speaking at the launch of the society's Christmas toy appeal.
