Peace demonstrations have been held in Turkey after the suicide bombings there over the past week.

The deathtoll has now reached 28.

President George W Bush said Turkey is now another front on the war on terrorism.

Meanwhile, the United States has issued a new worldwide alert over the danger of terrorist outrages.

It suggested al-Qaeda could be planning attacks even more devastating than those on the World Trade Centre and the Pentagon two years ago.

The US State Department said there were growing indications that al-Qaeda militants were preparing to strike American interests abroad.

The warning comes in the wake of four blasts in Istanbul over the last week which killed more than 50 people.

The National Security Council in Turkey has said that the country would not be intimidated by the latest terrorist attacks.

The body which advises political and military leaders, has appealed for regional and international co-operation in Turkey's efforts to combat terrorism.

The Turkish government has confirmed that a number of arrests have been made.

Turkish trade unions have been holding a series of 'peace protests' in major cities to express disgust at the attacks.
