Updated: 14:33, Monday, 17 November 2003

The way has been cleared for the implementation of the ban on smoking in the workplace after 16 February of next year.

It follows notification to the European Commission of new amendments to the regulations.

Under EU law, such regulations have to be notified to Brussels three months before they come into operation, and the ban can now be introduced after 16 February, although the Minister for Health has yet to name the exact date.

The amendments exclude a number of places from the smoking ban, including; hotel and guesthouse bedrooms, psychiatric hospitals and the Central Mental Hospital.
